Chili Cook-Off in Cameron Park

 I was invited to attend a Chili Cook-Off at Cameron Oaks Apartments here in Cameron Park. Several residents brought their own special chili dishes, each one that I tried was very tasty. But this Chili Feast had more to offer than just good food. The management at Cameron Oaks went to great lengths for this event.

In addition to the chili, there was a costume contest for all ages. Customes were not required but many came and joined in the spirit of fun. There was a live band that played at the clubhouse for hours, many residents danced to the familiar tunes. And tons of prizes donated by businesses in the area. I think that nearly everyone who attended walked away with something that night.

This video was recorded that night if you would like to see that party for the residents there. Cameron Oaks puts together several events throughout the year for their residents, it looks like a great place to live. Here is that video.

Construction Projects Are Still Available

Building permits have been very limited in the Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer Counties the last few years. Seems like the economy has gotten a hold of a lot of the local contractors. Judging by the shoppers in Home Depot, the plumbing supply house, and lumber yards; there hasn’t been a lot of activity. So I asked myself a simple question. What are the people, who are buying supplies, doing to get jobs that others aren’t doing?

I see general contractors, specialty trades contractors, handymen, maintenance workers and, of course, homeowners. These people are working. There phone rang with someone wanting them to perform services for money. Why did they get called and not the next guy? I have a couple of ideas.

Marketing is key!

If people do not know that you provide a service, they will not call. Sounds simple enough, so market your business! There are numberous local services search engines (most are free), find out some simple forms and start using them to get your services noticed. And that’s just the tip of the iceburg.

How about writing about your trade or expertise? Anyone can create a blog, write something about what you do and post it. Two of the larger free blog formats can be found at www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com . It’s a great place to get started. Don’t like to write? How about video? Give it a try and see what happens. Video editing takes a little while to learn, but it gets easier all the time. You never know what will become of it. People call me from sources that I would have never guessed.

Marketing your business is very important, in good times and bad. Those that work at getting the results that they would like, have a much greater chance of producing the results. The important thing is to get started. Nothing happens by itself. Take a chance at doing something new.

Contractor Needed – Find A Contractor In Your Area.

The fence is in desparate need of repair, adding an addition to your home, or building that dream house in the foothills. The need for a qualified contractor can come in many different forms. Property owners have used many different sources to find a qualified contractor in the past, some of those sources have gotten a little thin today.

How can I find a qualified contractor to do repairs or improvements? That may be the more pressing issue facing home owners today. It seems that the economy has removed many of the contractors and supply houses; I have to check my phone contact list regularly to make sure businesses are still around. The good news is that many of us are still here. Now how do you find us.

There hasn’t been a flood of construction going on, a referral from three years ago may not be so fresh today. Construction advertising has been light, ask anybody selling advertising space. How about the internet? Many contractors are turning to the internet to market there business, it’s low or no cost to do and it puts your name out there for property owners to find.

There are countless sites where you can search for businesses; there are even companies that will search at no cost to you. These companies charge the contractor for finding the homeowner “lead”. There are other sources to find businesses in your area. Here are just a small sample, most are very well established. Here are some examples.

Go to Google and do a search. Type in the type of contractor and your city. If I search “general contractors in Placerville” here is what the results look like.

You can do the same with Yahoo, Bing, Yelp, and many others. Give it a try! See a lot of the same names in all the searches? Start there. Can I trust these people? Isn’t the internet full of con-artists and thieves? That may be a little extreme! What you are trying to do is find a contractor, than follow the same steps that you would to qualify a contractor that you found be any means. Check for State Contractors License number, check business license, insurance, past customers, see past projects, etc. Be very thorough in checking the contractor, just because he is on the internet – do not assume anything. The Contractors Board here in California has a checklist for consumers dealing with contractors, your state may offer a similar checklist.

“Trust Me, I’m a Contractor”

One of the biggest hurdles that general contractors have to get past is the trust factor. Are we who we say we are? Will we do what we say we will do? Can we produce what we say we can produce? As a contractor we expect a total stranger to call us, schedule to meet, enter their home or business, tear something apart, then rebuild it to look awesome. That’s asking a lot from someone we just met or talked to on the phone.

That’s what it is all about in the service business – trust. 

Today the property owner has ways of getting to know the contractor before ever meeting them face-to-face.

Thanks to social networks like Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter, the general contractor can be “checked out” long before ever meeting him. Before the internet boom, you had a square box in the yellow pages, or a flyer shoved into your door as a first impression to the contractor. 

Today we can look at companies and people in a different way. We can see the contractors work, comments they have posted, who they associate with – and maybe that trust can be increased a little by getting to know them better.  And there is more that we can do.

In searching for the right contractor that you can trust you probably want someone near you. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way that we could finding someone that we could trust nearby. There are ways to look up general contractors in your area. Here are a few popular sites.

Google , Yahoo, and Bing all have local search directories. Yelp is another. These local searches may help pinpoint contractors near you to help get started on your quest for the trusted contractor. Are there any other ways to finding a service business? Many more. How about the most trusted source of finding a contractor ever – Word-Of-Mouth.

That’s right, people are most comfortable getting a referral based on what their friends and family have experienced. Someone they know has already tried using the contractor and was happy with the results. Don’t have friends and family that have used a general contractor?

Maybe the contractor has a list of past customers for you to contact. Don’t be afraid to make contact with the past customers, it may help you build that trust. And in this business, trust is very important to both you and the general contractor.
